The story

What you’ll hear on this walk.

New York pizza didn’t begin with the slice. This walk starts at Lombardi’s and the complicated story behind its claim to being America’s first pizzeria, then follows Prince Street to Vesuvio Bakery, where the neighborhood’s bread-baking culture helps explain what came before the slice shop.

From there, the route heads into Greenwich Village, where pizza starts looking much more familiar. At Joe’s, you’ll see the system that made the New York slice work; at John’s, you’ll encounter an older whole-pie tradition that never made that switch. The walk ends at Bleecker Street Pizza, with more than a century of New York pizza history packed into a little over a mile.

Don’t order a full pie at the first stop. Pace yourself. You’ve got several pizza stops ahead, and comparing the slices is half the fun. The fun is tasting how the pizza changes as you make your way through the Village.
