SoHo: The City Built in Cast Iron

Cast iron façades, commercial lofts, and the buildings that shaped SoHo’s second life.

This walk traces how cast iron transformed SoHo into a nineteenth-century commercial district—and how the buildings it left behind found a second life with artists.

The story

What you’ll hear on this walk.

SoHo is famous for its cast-iron buildings, but they make more sense when you stop seeing them as decoration and start seeing them as technology.

This walk follows that idea through the neighborhood, from Broadway into the cast-iron district and along Greene Street. Along the way, you’ll see how new ways of building changed what commercial architecture could look like, how an entire business district grew around those buildings, and why structures made for one version of New York ended up becoming essential to another.

Don’t just look at the storefronts. SoHo gets much more interesting when you look up: the best cast-iron details, old manufacturer marks, cornices, and oversized loft windows are usually above eye level.
